Cotton Knitwear: Benefits, Types, and Care

Why Cotton Is a Timeless Knitwear Choice

Cotton knitwear is a versatile and comfortable fabric, widely appreciated for its softness and breathability. This timeless material is a cornerstone of knitwear collections worldwide, and at Kniterlandia, we’re proud to showcase the finest cotton knitwear.

When comparing cotton knitwear to other premium fibers like Merino Wool or Cashmere, it’s all about the right material for the right purpose. Cotton excels in warmer weather and is much easier to maintain, while Merino offers year-round adaptability and Cashmere shines in ultra-soft cold-weather layering.

Cotton knitwear’s natural coolness and comfort make it the go-to choice for lightweight knits, everyday essentials, and effortless layering pieces.

OEKO-TEX 100 Certification: Safe and Responsible Cotton

At Kniterlandia, we believe that quality starts at the source. That’s why all of our cotton, as well as every other fiber we use, is OEKO-TEX 100 certified.

This certification guarantees that our cotton is free from harmful substances and safe for even the most sensitive skin. It also ensures that every step of the production process—from farming to finishing—meets responsible environmental and social standards.

Combed Cotton: Why We Love It at Kniterlandia

Combed cotton is a premium cotton type that undergoes an additional refining process. Short fibers and impurities are removed, leaving behind stronger, smoother, and longer-lasting threads.

This results in a fabric that feels luxuriously soft against the skin, resists pilling better than standard cotton, and holds its shape beautifully over time. That’s why we prioritize combed cotton in our designs—it brings the ideal combination of softness, durability, and refined texture to your favorite knitwear pieces.

Our Combed Cotton is crafted for both softness and strength. Read more about its benefits in our Glossary.

Organic Cotton: A Natural and Sustainable Choice

Organic cotton is grown without the use of synthetic pesticides, fertilizers, or genetically modified seeds. It’s a more sustainable, eco-conscious alternative to conventional cotton—and a choice we proudly stand behind.

In addition to being better for the planet, organic cotton is gentler on the skin and promotes ethical production practices. We use organic cotton that is typically certified by one of two trusted standards:

  • GOTS (Global Organic Textile Standard): Ensures strict environmental and ethical benchmarks throughout the entire supply chain.
  • OCS (Organic Content Standard): Verifies that the cotton is organically grown and responsibly sourced.

Cotton Merino Blend: The Perfect Balance

The Best of Both Worlds

Cotton Merino Blend knitwear is where our passion for natural fibers meets innovation. Cotton offers lightweight breathability, while Merino Wool adds softness, warmth, and moisture-wicking ability. At Kniterlandia, we combine the best of both for a fabric that performs beautifully across seasons.

That’s exactly what we’ve done with our 85% Organic Cotton / 15% Extra Fine Merino Wool blend—a material that delivers breathability, durability, and temperature control in beautiful balance. It feels lighter than pure Merino Wool, warmer than pure cotton, and remarkably versatile for year-round wear.

Curious about what makes our Cotton Merino Blend so special, and what each fiber brings to the table? Learn more about Merino Wool and Organic Cotton in our Glossary to understand their roles in our Cotton Merino Blend.

Why This Blend Works

We designed this blend with purpose: to create a knitwear fabric that blends softness with structure, lightness with warmth.

85% Organic Cotton provides breathable comfort, while 15% Extra Fine Merino Wool lends its thermoregulating, moisture-wicking, and elastic properties. The result is a fabric that feels more structured than Merino Wool alone, yet cozier and more dynamic than plain cotton.

Experience the best of both worlds with our Cotton Merino Capsule category: soft, breathable, and naturally temperature-regulating.

Where This Blend Truly Shines

This unique fiber combination finds its stride in transitional seasons and temperate climates. It’s lighter than full Merino, warmer than 100% cotton, and breathable enough to wear across a wide range of temperatures.

It’s also more resilient. The addition of Merino improves flexibility and structure, while the cotton content reinforces durability and shape retention. For those who appreciate low-maintenance natural fibers, this Cotton Merino Blend offers the benefits of wool without the delicate handling.

Experience the perfect balance of warmth and breathability with this blend, ideal for layering and everyday wear.

Comparing the Blend to 100% Cotton and 100% Merino Wool

When it comes to softness, breathability, and structure, this blend sits comfortably in between its two source fibers:

  • Softness & Feel: It’s smoother than pure Merino, but softer and more supple than regular cotton. You get a natural stretch, a lightweight drape, and a refined feel that’s easy to wear all day. It doesn’t cling, scratch, or feel heavy, just smooth, breathable comfort.
  • Breathability & Temperature Regulation: Cotton is great for airflow, but lacks the insulating properties of Merino. This blend balances both, keeping you cool when needed and warm when it counts. Ideal for changing indoor and outdoor settings, it adapts to your body without overheating.
  • Moisture Management: While cotton can hold onto moisture, Merino wicks it away. The blend dries faster than pure wool while still managing sweat better than cotton. You stay dry longer, with less need for frequent washing, especially in cool, transitional weather.
  • Durability & Shape: Merino can stretch if not properly cared for, cotton can lose structure over time. The blend resists both issues, holding shape and structure with ease. It recovers after washing and doesn’t bag out after wear, making it ideal for everyday use.
  • Pilling & Maintenance: Pure Merino is more prone to pilling. Cotton resists it. Together, they reduce visible wear and maintain their look over time. The blend pills less than wool alone, and any surface fuzz is easier to manage, so your knit stays looking newer, longer.

Why We Love It

At Kniterlandia, the Cotton Merino Blend is a perfect example of how we choose materials based on performance, comfort, and longevity. This blend hits the sweet spot.

It’s versatile enough for daily wear. Cozy, breathable, and easier to care for than full Merino. Certified by OEKO-TEX 100, it also meets our high standards for sustainability and safety.

Merino Wool: The Ultimate Guide

Why Merino Wool Is the Ultimate Natural Fiber

Soft, breathable, and incredibly versatile—Merino Wool is far more than just another fabric. It’s a high-performance fiber that naturally adapts to your body’s needs, keeping you warm when it’s cold and comfortably cool when temperatures rise. Unlike traditional wool, which can feel coarse and heavy, Merino fibers are remarkably fine, making them luxuriously soft against the skin.

At Kniterlandia, we believe Merino Wool represents the perfect balance of comfort, durability, and sustainability, making it our material of choice for premium knitwear.

Looking for the ultimate blend of warmth and breathability? Explore our Merino Capsule collection and discover why Merino Wool excels.

The Science Behind Merino Wool’s Softness

What sets Merino Wool apart from conventional wool is its fiber diameter, measured in microns. The lower the micron count, the finer—and softer—the wool. While traditional wool can measure upwards of 25 microns, making it coarse and sometimes itchy, Merino fibers are much finer, often falling between 17 to 23 microns. This ultra-fine structure gives Merino its signature smoothness, making it suitable even for sensitive skin.

Beyond softness, the fineness of Merino fibers allows for enhanced flexibility, creating lightweight yet insulating knitwear that moves with you. But not all Merino Wool is created equal, and understanding the different grades can help you choose the right knitwear for your needs.

Why We Prefer Extra Fine Merino Wool

At Kniterlandia, Extra Fine Merino Wool (19.5 microns) is our preferred choice—for its exceptional balance of softness, durability, and affordability. It offers the refined feel of premium wool while remaining practical for everyday wear.

Merino Wool: A Natural Performer

Merino Wool isn’t just soft—it’s an incredibly functional fiber with a range of benefits that make it stand out from synthetic and other natural materials.

Temperature Regulation

Unlike synthetic fabrics, Merino fibers naturally regulate temperature by trapping air within their structure. This means warmth in winter and breathability in summer, keeping you comfortable year-round.

Moisture-Wicking & Odor Resistance

Merino Wool can absorb up to 30% of its weight in moisture without feeling damp. This keeps you dry while its natural antibacterial properties prevent odor buildup, meaning fewer washes and long-lasting freshness.

Merino Wool offers the perfect balance of warmth and breathability. Discover how it keeps you comfortable year-round with our thoughtfully crafted knitwear.

Sustainability & Ethical Sourcing

As a 100% natural, renewable, and biodegradable fibre, merino wool is an environmentally considerate choice. Unlike synthetics that contribute to microplastic pollution, merino decomposes naturally, returning to the earth without harm. At Kniterlandia, we use only merino wool certified under the Responsible Wool Standard (RWS), which prohibits mulesing and ensures audited animal welfare and land stewardship. While no certification can guarantee full traceability of every fibre, RWS represents a meaningful step toward responsible sourcing.

  • Responsible Wool Standard (RWS) – We use only merino wool certified under the RWS, which prohibits mulesing and ensures audited standards of animal welfare and land stewardship.
  • Responsible Farming Practices – Our wool is linked to farms that follow humane care and sustainable land management, as verified through independent certification.
  • Low-Impact Natural Fibre – Merino wool is a renewable, biodegradable material that requires far less chemical processing than synthetics.

How to Care for Merino Wool Knitwear

Merino Wool is not only luxurious but also surprisingly easy to maintain when cared for correctly. Not all Merino garments are the same—some are treated to be machine washable, while others require more delicate handling. Always check the care label before washing.

For machine-washable Merino Wool, use a wool-specific cycle with cold water (20-30°C) and a low spin speed (600 RPM or lower). Avoid tumble drying, as heat can damage the fiber’s natural elasticity. Hand washing is always recommended for maximum longevity—gently soaking the garment in cold water with a mild wool detergent ensures it retains its original softness and shape.

For maximum longevity, we always recommend hand washing your Merino Wool knitwear. It’s the safest option to maintain its softness and shape.

When drying, always lay your knitwear flat to prevent stretching. Hanging while wet can cause the garment to lose its shape. For long-term storage, fold your Merino garments rather than hanging them to preserve their structure.
